Mauser – Anyone who knows me or my wife will instantly recognize Mauser. His size, his color, his stubbornness, his silly demeanor and people’s reactions to him were all drawn from experiences with our own Great Dane, Grendel, who was a large part of our lives for over ten years. We took a slightly more serious approach to Grendel’s training than Sheriff Macklin does for Mauser, but that’s the only real difference. Grendel traveled everywhere with us, “worked” as an animal-assisted therapy dog, and left a trail of smiles and laughter wherever he went.

Any person having ever had a Great Dane as part
of their family would both sympathize and empathize with the Mauser/Grendel characters.
Yes, they are definitely characters in every way.
I had the great joy to share part of life w/Ceasar a fawn with black mask.
I hope you’re enjoying Mauser’s adventures.
You’re absolutely right about Danes being characters — all dogs are special, but there’s just something about a Dane…. 🙂
It’s been nice to be able to keep a little bit of Grendel alive through writing about Mauser.
I’m completely hooked. Thank you for writing and sharing these stories. I will definitely think of Mauser and Gretchen when I see a Great Dane!
Thanks, Brenda! I hope you continue to enjoy Larry’s and Mauser’s adventures!
I got hocked on the series (Larry Macklin) thanks to Mauser! We have had great danes for over 30 years and can see Mauser in each one (even the obedience Champions. Love the breed and love the Mauser books!
I love hearing that, Barbara! I actually started writing the Larry Macklin series as a way to deal with my grief when we lost Grendel at 10 yrs in 2015. Developing the character of Mauser was a great way to share a little bit of Big G with the rest of the world. Grendel was our first Dane, and we haven’t been able to bring ourselves to get another one since, but one day we will. They’re true a very special breed!
